Stichting Herdenkings-, Bezinnings- en Ontmoetingscentrum In de Toren
Op 10 januari 1999 vond in Muziekcafé Bacchus te Gorinchem een tragisch schietincident plaats, waarbij drie meisjes betrokken waren. Twee van hen vonden daarbij de dood. Vanaf dat moment is er nagedacht over de manieren waarop zinloos geweld in onze samenleving bestreden kan worden en werden er activiteiten ontplooid. Begin 2000 nam de gemeente Gorinchem het initiatief tot het bijeenroepen van een Platform tegen Zinloos Geweld. Na diverse bijeenkomsten en in overleg met de ouders van een van de slachtoffers, koos het Platform voor het opzetten van een centrum in de toren naast de Grote Kerk waar een ruimte zou moeten komen voor bezinning en herdenking in breder perspectief.
Voor het beheer van het centrum werd eind 2000 de Stichting Herdenkings-, Bezinnings- en Ontmoetingscentrum In de Toren Gorinchem opgericht. Stichting In de Toren beheert de ruimte en het daarin aangebrachte kunstwerk, de Lichttrechter. Daarnaast vraagt de stichting door middel van activiteiten aandacht voor de gevolgen van (zinloos) geweld.
In de voet van de Grote Toren in de Krijtstraat is het herdenkings-, bezinnings- en ontmoetingscentrum In de Toren gevestigd. Hier is het kunstwerk De Lichttrechter van de Utrechtse beeldend kunstenaar Corrie van de Vendel aangebracht. Zo’n 1000 kunststofdraden leiden het licht van buiten naar binnen, komen bij elkaar in een knoop en lopen uit in een bundel roestvrijstalen kokertjes die in een holling in de vloer lijken te verdwijnen. In deze kokers kunnen bezoekers een geschreven boodschap achterlaten. Voor de ingang van de toren is een bolling aangebracht. Wie hier op stapt, merkt dat via sensoren het licht in de ruimte aangaat. Valt overdag het licht de ruimte in, ’s avonds straalt het licht juist naar buiten. De symboliek achter deze gedachte is het doorgaan van het leven.

English translation: Time stood still for a moment
Time stood still for a moment, that day in January 1999. A shooting incident in local music bar left two young girls dead and one girl seriously injured. In response, the Platform against Violence was established in the following year, in which diverse social, cultural and religious groups from Gorinchem were represented. Within the same year, this resulted in the establishment of a foundation for Commemorating, Reflecting and Meeting, called 'In de Toren'. In collaboration with the municipality of Gorinchem, a centre was set up at the foot of the Grote Toren where there is room for commemoration and reflection in a broader sense.
The municipality of Gorinchem invited artist Corrie van de Vendel from the city of Utrecht to design an artwork specifically for this venue. Her design, Light Funnel, uses natural light from outside the building, whilst respecting its monumental character. Approximately 1000 plastic wires guide the light from the outside to the inside of the tower where they come together in a knot and end in a cluster of stainless steel tubes that seem to disappear into a cavity in the floor. Visitors can leave a written note in these tubes. In addition, a curved stone was placed in front of the tower entrance. When one steps on this stone at night, sensors switch on the lights inside the tower. While during daytime the light enters the venue, it shines out at night. This symbolises the continuation of life.
The 'In de Toren' foundation aims to preserve and open up the tower for the public to commemorate, reflect and meet. It tries to achieve this by organizing small-scale activities and by gathering and disseminating information. The aim is to draw public attention to the consequences of violence. A recurring activity of the foundation is the commemoration of the deceased in Gorinchem, which takes place on the 31st of December.
Many volunteers are needed to run the activities of the foundation. These volunteers support and propagate the work of the foundation, help with activities and are hosts during the opening hours of the centre. The venue can also be used for school projects, for families or associations that want to commemorate an event or for other activities that suit the objectives of the foundation. In order to make these activities possible, incidental gifts, periodic contributions or sponsorship funds are more than welcome. Especially since the foundation is kept running exclusively by volunteers, and is not supported by governmental funds. Of course mental support is also highly appreciated. The centre belongs to the people of Gorinchem and serves the entire community.
